Westfield They have thousands of artifacts, from century-old photographs to original manuscripts of the Westfield school song, and later this month, members of the Westfield Washington Historical Society will have a place to display them for public view.
On April 26, the society -- founded about a decade ago with a mission to preserve the township's history -- will open a historical museum in downtown Westfield.
The building will be a landmark for the group, which has tried since its inception to find a spot to call home, as well as for Westfield, which gained its city status this year and has been primed for growth and change.
The museum will be housed at 145 S. Union St., the site of Westfield's original town hall and formerly its police and fire stations. The main floor will house exhibits on subjects such as early businesses and the Underground Railroad, in which the historically abolitionist Quaker stronghold played a major role.
A $35,000 grant from county tourism officials helped boost the effort.
